WEDDING FILM STYLESCINEMATIC vs DOCUMENTARY
You’ll see these terms come up a lot when exploring videography. Here’s what they actually mean from a filmmaker’s perspective and how we blend both styles to create our films.
HONESTLY
WEDDING FILMS ARE A SPECTRUM
DOCUMENTARY
CINEMATIC
Wedding videographers often use words like cinematic, documentary, timeless, candid, and authentic to describe their style. The reality is, it’s rarely that simple. We believe that a great wedding film isn’t defined by a single label. It’s shaped by a range of creative choices, from how the day is captured to how it’s edited and told.
For us, it’s about drawing from different approaches rather than following trends that come and go.
That said, these terms do point to real differences in style. Understanding them can help you figure out what feels right for you. So let’s break it down.
Cinematic vs Documentary Wedding Films
What Do These Styles Actually Mean?
At their core, “cinematic” and “documentary” describe two different approaches to capturing and telling your wedding story. Most modern wedding films sit somewhere in between, but understanding each style will help you recognise what you’re drawn to.
THE KEY DIFFERENCES
CINEMATIC
THIS STYLE TPYICALLY INCLUDES
Thoughtful framing and camera movement
Slow motion and dynamic shots
Music-driven storytelling
Carefully selected audio from vows and speeches
Creative editing that builds emotion and flow
The goal isn’t just to simply show what happened. It’s to make you feel it.
Moments may be slightly guided or enhanced to look their best, and the final film is shaped to tell a cohesive, engaging story rather than simply playing events back in order.
DOCUMENTARY
THIS STYLE TPYICALLY INCLUDES
Real-time or lightly edited sequences
Longer cuts of key moments (like ceremonies or speeches)
Natural audio as it happened
Minimal direction from the videographer
A focus on authenticity over stylisation
The goal here is preserving the day as it was with minimal interruption
To create a true-to-life record of your wedding as it happened, without too much influence from the filmmaker.
POLISHED, REFINED, EMOTIONAL
WHAT IS A “CINEMATIC” WEDDING FILM
A cinematic wedding film is crafted to feel like a movie. It’s intentional, stylised, and carefully edited to create an emotional experience.
A cinematic wedding film is shaped by music. They use carefully chosen tracks that match the emotional arc of your day, using them to guide the story and build towards the moments that matter most. The goal is to create something that feels immersive, designed to move you and bring those emotions back every time you watch it.
Visually, these films are crafted with intention. Using stabilised camera movement to create a polished, refined look, and carefully selecting the strongest moments, those that feel natural, meaningful, and visually clean. The best parts of your vows and speeches are woven in, but it’s the music that ultimately drives the feeling.
Rather than simply retelling the day from start to finish, cinematic films often play with time, blending moments together to create a more engaging, emotional experience. The result is something that feels less like a recording and more like a film you’ll want to come back to again and again.
OBSERVATIONAL, TRUE-TO-LIFE, MINIMALLY EDITED
WHAT IS A “DOCUMENTARY” WEDDING FILM
A documentary-style film takes a more observational approach. It focuses on capturing the day as it naturally unfolds, with minimal interference.
Documentary wedding films sit on the other end of the spectrum. Rather than shaping the day through the edit, they allow the day itself to guide the story. The focus is on capturing moments as they naturally unfold, without direction or intervention.
Music is still present, but it plays a supporting role rather than driving the emotion. Real audio takes centre stage, conversations, laughter, vows, and speeches, often shown in longer, uninterrupted sequences. There’s less cutting, more breathing room, and a willingness to let moments play out in full, including the imperfect and unfiltered ones.
The approach is observational and unobtrusive. Nothing is staged or set up. Instead, the focus is on people, how they interact, react, and experience the day in real time.
These films tend to be longer and more gently paced, often unfolding in a way that mirrors the natural rhythm of the wedding. Rather than a tightly structured narrative, they offer a more complete, true-to-life reflection, allowing you to revisit not just how it looked, but how it actually felt to be there.

OUR APPROACH
OUR FILMS ARE A BLEND OF EVERYTHING
Our approach is grounded in capturing your day as it naturally unfolds, while shaping it into something cinematic and engaging to watch.
We truly believe that the best films are those that blend artistry with authenticity. For us, that means that we won’t force moments or over-direct, and instead, we focus on creating an environment where things can happen naturally, then elevate those moments through thoughtful filming and editing.
We shape the story around the couple and the day. We prioritise including your vows as they were in the moment and emphasise their impact through thoughtful weaving with music. Similarly, with your speeches, we pick and feature the best moments that we feel serve the story, whether they provide a good laugh or hit deep in the feels.
The result is a film that feels authentic to you, while still being polished, emotional, and timeless.
LET’S GET PRACTICAL
HOW DOES IT LOOK ON THE DAY
DIRECTIONS ON THE DAY
We’re big believers in a relaxed, fly-on-the-wall approach. Our goal is to blend in and capture moments as they naturally happen, rather than interrupt them. That said, we’ll offer gentle guidance when needed. Simple things like suggesting a walk, a spin, or a moment together. It’s always kept light, natural, and never forced. Even when we are guiding you, the aim is for it to feel effortless, so you can stay present and enjoy the moment. We also work closely with your photographer, following their lead and building off their direction. Often, we’ll help guide you into a moment and then step back and letting the real reactions unfold naturally.
OUR PRESENCE
We understand that a wedding day can feel busy, with a lot of moving parts and people needing your attention. The last thing we want is to add to that chaos. Our approach is to be as unobtrusive as possible, blending into the background so you don’t feel like you’re constantly on camera. The planning we do beforehand helps with this too. By getting to know each other ahead of time, it feels more natural on the day and never awkward or intrusive. In terms of equipment, we keep things minimal and adapt depending on the setting. For ceremonies and portraits, we often use a stabiliser for a clean, polished look, positioning ourselves thoughtfully (and using zoom lenses where needed) to stay out of the way. During getting ready, the reception, and dancing, we switch to handheld to maintain that candid, documentary feel. We may also set up subtle lighting for speeches to ensure they’re captured clearly, but always in a way that remains as low-profile as possible.
HOW YOUR FILM IS EDITED
Our films are driven by music. We spend time carefully selecting tracks that feel timeless, something that will still resonate years from now and won’t feel dated. In the edit, we shape the story to feel natural and engaging. We may layer moments together, like pairing bridal footage with audio from the ceremony, to enhance emotion and storytelling. While we do play with time creatively, we aim to keep the overall structure easy to follow. The day unfolds in a way that feels familiar, building from the early moments through to the energy of the dance floor, so your film is not only emotional but also effortless to watch.
WEDDING FILM STYLES FAQ
How much do you actually direct on the day?
Honestly, not a lot. Outside of a few moments during portraits, we mostly take a step back and focus on capturing what’s naturally happening. Our priority is being in the right place at the right time - whether that’s getting the drone up, following you as you mingle, or catching moments as they unfold.
If we see an opportunity for something fun or visually strong that doesn’t require much direction, we’ll suggest it, but for the most part, we let you do your thing.
What if we’re awkward on camera?
Totally normal and nothing to worry about. Most couples feel this way at first.
Our approach is designed to help you feel comfortable, not put you on the spot. We keep things relaxed, offer light guidance when needed, and focus on creating an environment where you can just be yourselves. The best moments always come from that.
Can we do more staged or directed moments?
Absolutely. If you love a more styled or editorial look, we can lean into that. Whether it’s recreating a specific idea, capturing something a bit more fashion-forward, or adding more guided moments throughout the day, we’re more than happy to tailor things to your vision.
At the end of the day, it’s about creating something that feels right for you.
Will you help us plan moments for the video?
Of course. If there are specific moments you’re considering - like a first look, private vows, or a sunset session - we can help you plan and time them so they fit naturally into the day and look great on film.
We’ll guide you on what works best without overcomplicating things.
Do we need to set aside a lot of time for video?
Not at all. We work alongside your schedule and your photographer, so there’s no need to carve out extra time just for video. Most of what we capture happens naturally throughout the day, with only a small portion involving light direction during portraits.
